|Derrick McCray will be judge on reality tv show - 11-17-2013
Derrick McCray has already made a name for himself and his barbecue. His family-owned business has been around for decades, and he’s known for catering big sports events including recent Super Bowls. Perhaps it’s his reputation that landed him his next big gig: a judge on the Discovery Channel’s television show Holy Smokes. “I’m just excited. I think it’s an honor that they chose me. That says a lot about our barbecue and about our accomplishments as a business that they chose me,” McCray said. “I’ll be the new Simon Cowell of the barbecue competition.”
The McCray family has been known for their barbecue in Palm Beach County since at least the 1940s when McCray’s great uncle started Harvey’s Barbecue on 7th Street and Tamarind in West Palm Beach. McCray’s late father the Rev. Herman C. McCray Jr. took over operating McCray’s BBQ when it moved to Riviera Beach.
“That’s where we took off,” McCray explains.
